The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student records, defines what constitutes a student record, and identifies information that can be in the public domain. The U.S. Department of Education has an extensive FERPA FAQ that addresses many questions from the point of view of parents and educational entities.
The Children's Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA) was created to put parents in control over what personal information is collected from their children while using the internet. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has put together a comprehensive COPPA FAQ, which we suggest that you peruse to learn more about this important legislation.
The Children's Internet Privacy and Protection Act (CIPA) was created to address the need for schools to ensure that students were not accessing inappropriate content through the internet. It is administered through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
